Small and usually packed eatery serving up a wide range of simple fare, but the crowd-pullers are the beef brisket noodles (a scarcely believable $13) and the homemade giant fish ball soup ($16). Where to Shop in Hong Kong?

Hong Kong is the shopping capital of the world. It has the busiest business districts, where all good things come and go. If you shop for anything like fashion, food and grocery, specialist shops, etc, it’s best to know where to look. Here’re a few shops that may give you a jolt on where to start.

Markets in Hong Kong come in many shapes and sizes. There are day markets and there are night markets, name it… Hong Kong has it all. Markets selling clothing, plants, watches, knick-knacks, lots of wares, and they even sell pet birds and cages too.

The Temple Street Night market just on Kansu Street and Jordan Street, Kowloon, is consisted of up to 400 stalls offering an assortment of merchandise from clothes, CDs, cheap watches, Cantonese opera and even snake soup. As you realize everything’s going peculiar by the minute, this market will even blow your mind with more weird things. This exciting market is open daily from 8pm-11pm.

If you’re looking for raw materials, then Stanley Market is just the thing you’re looking for. Situated in Central, Hong Kong, the Stanley market is also consisted of several stalls selling merchandise ranging from pottery, silk cloth and Chinese knick-knacks.. Just remember to take bus number six from Exchange Square, and the bus will take you to Stanley in no time.

If you’re sassy and want to go classy, then fashion shops are your ticket to the perfect shopping experience. If you’re fond of branded stuff, but are too expensive for you, why not try the Prada Warehouse and Joyce Boutique? These shops drop their prices up to 50% on designer names like Martin Margiela, Comme de Garçon, Armani, Marni, and Costume National. But the discount doesn’t stop there. Dickson Warehouse Boutiques offer items with brand names like Charles Jourdan, Polo by Ralph Lauren, and Kenneth Cole. This boutique drops their items from up to 90% off! Check out these shops, The Dickson Warehouse Boutique can be found in New World Centre, Tsim Sha Tsui. You can go to the South Horizons in Ap Lei Chau to drop by the Prada Warehhouse. Joyce Boutique is at Ocean Centre, Tsim Sha Tsui.

Harvey Nichols also opened shop last September 2005, and is also a great place to check an array of luxury brands. Harvey Nichols is situated in the Landmark, 15 Queen’s Road; you cannot miss this five storey establishment, which also includes a restaurant on the fourth floor.

The Factory Outlet is another great discount shop. The Factory Outlet drops their merchandise from up to 90% in discounts. If you’re lucky you might find items from Nicole Fahri, Ralph Lauren, Emanuel Ungaro, Calvin Klein, Jigsaw and Banana Republic. Check out the factory at Fa Yuen Street in Mong Kok, Hong Kong.

If you’re buying or just window shopping, these spots will be the best options for you to try. Look for the best deals and maybe you’ll find what you’re looking for. Happy Shopping!

Mongkok… Sight seeing

Goldfish Street (Tung Choi Street)
A visit to the Hong Kong’s Goldfish Market is one of many free activities available to travelers. The market is on Tung Choi Street in Mongkok, Kowloon. It is open daily from 10:00 A.M. to 6:00 P.M.

If you have an aquarium back home, buy an unusual Hong Kong souvenir – an aquatic rock or ornament will last for years.

Why do people love goldfish? Well, many Hong Kong citizens consider it good luck. Goldfish keep evil spirits away from home. And of course, the colourful appearance of the fish can decorate the house too!

The Goldfish Market is located close to Langham Place Hotel and the Night Bazaars and Ladies Market. Spend a day in the area enjoying the free activities there.

Flower Market Road
Hong Kong’s, Flower Market is a colourful place to visit. Walking through the street market area is the perfect way to enjoy the blooms and their aroma.

In the spring, there are different varieties of blossoms. Inhale the delicate fragrance of cherry, peach and plum flowers.

Tourists in Hong Kong must visit the Flower Market the week before the Chinese New Year. The abundance of flowers will amaze you. The Chinese believe fresh flowers in the house on New Year’s Day will bring them good luck.

Go ahead and purchase some lovely flowers. Your hotel will gladly supply a vase while someone will arrange the bouquet.

Yuen Po Street Bird Garden
Most of the street markets are in the Mongkok district. The Yuen Po Street Bird Garden is the market for songbird lovers. The birds bring good luck to their owners and are prized not for their plumage but for their voices.

Not only are birds available for purchase, there are also many different items for their comfort. There are beautiful bamboo cages, all types of bird foods, grasshoppers, crickets, mealy worms, as well as accessories to decorate the cage.

The Yuen Po Street Bird Garden, as its name implies, is on Yuen Po Street in Mongkok. It is open daily from 7:00 A.M. to 8:00 P.M. The Flower Market is around the corner.

Come and visit the gathering place for Hong Kong songbird lovers. The bird garden is a beautiful, musical respite from city bustle.

Wanchai

Wan Chai is an administrative district of Hong Kong Island

Districts

  • Wan Chai

Wan Chai the district, as opposed to the administrative region, is famous for its bars and nightlife. Located between Causeway Bay and Admiralty, Wanchai has an inner-city feel that makes it an interesting area to walk around. Wanchai has traditional street markets that are still outdoors. Butchers hang meat on hooks that overshadow pavements.

  • Causeway Bay

Shopping district, home to large department stores, such as Sogo. Causeway Bay is crowded but here you can eat and shop until very late. Some major supermarkets and eateries stay open 24 hours. Times Square in Causeway Bay is a major focal point, especially at the ‘calendar’ New Year when you will be wise to stay away if you hate crowds.

  • Happy Valley

Nestled behind the Happy Valley Racecourse, away from the MTR line, this district has a more laid-back feel than nearby Wan Chai and Causeway Bay. Because of this it is a popular residential area, especially among expats. There is a tram line circling the racecourse that serves the district. This area is also home to the beautiful and historic Hong Kong Cemetery.

Get in

  • Ferry

The Star Ferry arrives at Wan Chai Pier from Hung Hom and Tsim Sha Tsui.

  • MTR

The Tsuen Wan Line from Kowloon passes Admiralty. From here the Island Line passes through Wan Chai and Causeway Bay stations.

  • Tram

The tram runs from Kennedy Town to Sai Wan Ho.

What to see

Horse Racing

Horse Racing has been taking place at Happy Valley racetrack since 1846. Happy Valley is particularly impressive during the evening meets with the surrounding skyscrapers lit up.

View

Central Plaza can be seen from all of Wan Chai. It is actually possible to tell the time by the changing lights on the top of this building. During business hours, you can take the lift from the ground floor to the sky lobby on the 46th floor to get a spectacular free view of the harbor and the island.

Noon Day Gun

Across from the World Trade Center near Causeway Bay is the historical Noon Day Gun, deemed thus because it is fired off every day at noon. To access the Noon Day Gun, enter the underground tunnel between the World Trade Center and the Excelsior Hotel and follow the signs.

What to do

Victoria Park

Victoria Park is located west of the busy Causeway Bay shopping streets. Take some time to walk through it or to watch people play football on 3 fields. There is also a jogging track through the park. The Victoria Park can be reached by MTR Exit B at Thi Hau station. During the summer months you can use the public open-air pool in Victoria Park.

Central Library

Central Library feels a world apart from the hustle of Causeway Bay where it is located. It sits facing Victoria Park and overlooks the harbor. Lending services are provided to non-residents upon production of either a residents Hong Kong ID card, or a cash deposit. It is well stocked with Western periodicals, as well as free Internet access. Major newspapers from all over the world are available. There are public computer terminals throughout all floors. The working tables with internet access for your laptop start in the 4th floor. Either you bring your own LAN cable or ask one of the clerks on the floor to lend you one. Do not forget to bring a power converter for the power plugs to charge your laptop (visitors from the United Kingdom can use UK plugs in Hong Kong).

Where to go shopping

The main department stores are in Causeway Bay. The biggest of these is Sogo. Nearby is the Times Square shopping mall.
